Pair of Mixed Media Tags By Dutt Preety (December Challenge Inspiration)

Today, I'd like to share a Pair of Sea Inspired Mixed Media Tags.

This is my inspiration for the December Challenge.

We have a beautiful, cool, summery, sea & beach themed December moodboard.

I've prepared a lil' pictorial for these tags.

Pair of Sea Inspired Mixed Media Tags

Pictorial:

Step 1: Cut out 6 by 3 inch tags out of thick cardboard & then applied modelling paste through Tim Holtz stencils to create background texture on the tags. Then adhered chippies, sea shells, charms and art stones of various sizes onto the tags to create visually pleasing compositions. Used 3d Gel Medium for heavier items and Soft Gel Medium for the lighter items & then applied white gesso to everything to prepare them for coloring.

Step 2: Created the first layers of color, by adding Lindy's sprays in different shades of blue and brown. Dried between each layer. 

Step 3: To get more shine & intensity of color, applied Finnabair's metallic acrylic paints (sprayed with water to create movement of the color)

Step 4: Highlighted the textures and toned down the intense colors on the raised surfaces by applying Nuvo Mousse in different shades of blue, Inka Gold wax & then did dry brushing with white gesso to highlight some of the areas

Step 5: In the end, tied hemp twine to the tags, added Tim Holtz quote chips for the titles, added one little glass bottle filled with sand to each tag, adhered cheese cloth with soft gel, distressed the edges of the tags with distress inks & created white ink splatter.

Hello to all of you, beautiful artistic souls, It's Libeeti Frenkel here, as a Guest Designer with my first project for Art & Soul Studio.

I was inspired by the current challenge - 'Use Red':

I decided to make an art journal spread, to express the message the older me would give to the younger me.

I've made a short video about the creative process:

Mixed Media Tags by Tanyalee Kahler

Welcome to another tutorial prepared for Art and Soul Studios. Today I am going to show you how I make a set of two mixed media tags.

To begin with, I used some light modelling paste through a Stencil Girl stencil to create some background texture. Once that was dry, I applied so Heavy Gesso because I knew I was going to be using Jane Davenport Inks and didn't want them to soak through the tags too much.

I also made my own tissue paper ephemera by stamping some Dina Wakely and Fiskars stamps onto some deli paper. This paper dries quite transparent when glued down with matte medium.

To create the colourful background, I sprayed some water onto the gessoed tags and dropped ink in each colour and let it swirl and blend. I ended up mopping some of it back up because it was very wet. The colours dried a lovely muted tone and matched the line art stamps on the deli paper perfectly.

I glued down the deli paper images and finished with some ink splatters and journaling.

Tag Journal by Tanyalee Kahler

Hi everyone, Tanyalee here with my latest blog post and tutorial for Art and Soul Studio.

I have made a mini journal using tags, water-soluble crayons, collage and paint.

To start off with, I put a layer of gesso on each side of the tags so the watercolour doesn't soak right in. Then I added some impasto paint in coordinating colours and marks using the water-soluble crayons.

I then joined all of the tags together with washi tape and gel medium to create the journal

Once that was all dry, I went crazy with collage papers and stencils with light modelling paste.

And to finish it off, I added some acrylic ink drips in coordinating colours.

It was a relatively quick project but needed a fair amount of drying time between each layer.

I plan on using the finished journal to tell a story as part of the Get Messy Art Journal Season of Story prompts.

Happy Sunday Funday!! Have a peek at this over your morning cuppa!
Today I get to follow on from my Industrial Steampunk styled Mood Board Challenge to play with the same theme on an set of tags I created.

After sticking down the Stamperia papers to the tags and adding some mesh (Gyprock tape) with 3D gel,  I used a stencil and sprayed a fairly heavy coat of Tim Holtz Resist spray. Once this dried I used Distress Oxide in Evergreen Bough and applied a heavy layer over the whole surface to pick up the exposed bits of paper that the resist spray didn't reach. With a dry cloth I polished off the excess. 

I added the super funky Architextures and a layer of Nuvo Mousse through a stencil. I applied some Distress Crayon with my finger and rubbed it all over the raised surfaces to create shadows. Then inked the edges to finish off my background.

I used Embossing powder and waxes over black gesso on my chipboard and veneers. Tore a piece of calico and distressed it to frame my globes. I added in the door knobs and keyhole embellishments. Stamped some inspirational quotes and finished off with some Art Stones and Micro Beads from Prima.

I thought I'd keep it simple for this lesson and do a trio of tags. I used the paper from my Jane Davenport journal and then made three tags.

I also wanted to keep it fun and decided to draw three lovely ladies with different body types in a 1950's style.

I tend to use a lot of acrylic paint in my work  but I wanted this project to give my Jane Davenport watercolours a run for its money.

Using a combination of both watercolour sets, I got a nice mix of warm and cooler colours. They are pretty vibrant so you don't need to use too much.

I actually liked the tags plain but I couldn't help myself from putting some collage on them and outlining them with black archival ink.

and there you have it a cute tag which is really easy and quick.

A Trio of Tags

Hello Soul Sisters

 

The day has finally arrived that I get to share with you my very first creation and tutorial for Art and Soul Studio. I am really excited to be here and I hope that you follow along on our journey. We have lots to share.

 

This month I decided to upcycle a set of three tags, the tags come from the purchase of tracksuit pants for my daughter and son for school. You can find lots of things to upcycle when you start looking. These tags were a heavy quality and I could not throw them away.

 

 

So this is what the original tags looked like.

 

I removed the cord from all three tags then I set about sanding the surface away, I could have covered them with white gesso but I wanted some of the original print to show through. I did end up sanding away more than I wanted to, but that happens. Once sanded I coated the tags with a couple of layers of clear gesso, drying in between each layer.

 

Once the clear gesso was dry I flipped the tags over and used painters tape to tape them together so I was only working on one surface. The next step was to use a stamp and heat emboss the background. I wanted the texture and design of the stamp to show not the colour of an ink so I used a watermark stamp pad and clear embossing powder.

 

Next I selected the three colours of paint and used my fingers to apply the paint over the surface of my tags. I used a baby wipe to remove some of the paint so the surface was not completely coloured. My heat gun was used next as I am rather impatient when it comes to drying, this brought the embossing to the surface.

 

Layers are important when you are creating depth so I found a stencil and applied paint through the stencil.

 

Still not enough layers from my point of view so I used another stamp with a coloured ink and again heat embossed the design with clear embossing powder.

 

At this stage the painter's tape was removed and the tags became 3 work surfaces. I stamped and added a saying to each of them. I was conscious that I had created them as a trio so I made sure that when put together they looked like they belonged with each other.
