Moment in Time by Kristy Abela - September Mood Board Challenge

Welcome back to another mood board challenge. My personal favourite colours are coppers and teals when crafting... My collections dominates my shelves. 

This is the regular crew at my place, my sons and their best mates... can you pick who are mine and who's not???

Please forgive me for bending the rules... I used a Dragonfly!

Some texture for the background

Some Lindy's sprays and a bit of dry brushing with White Gesso.

Highlighting the depth with a charcoal pencil. 

Lots of embossing with Lindy's of Scrap FX chipboards and a bit of a highlight with some Prima Waxes.

I used some rust pastes on some of the pieces as well to give it the rustic look. I finished off the patina with some blue waxes. 

Added some stones and some beads and a couple of metal charms from my stash.

My favourite part of the whole project is the way this dragonfly turned out... 

The way the wings took on the graduation of colour was perfection!

Mood Board Challenge Rules

Hi Everyone.. Welcome to my inspiration post...

I really wanted to follow up on the quick bite I posted last time to show you how you can take those techniques one step further and create a Steampunk masterpiece.. 

In this project I created a black canvas with pieces of Corrugated cardstock and tissue paper using gesso as a base and also as a 'glue'. 

I primed the canvas and put the scrunched up tissue paper on top to create lots of texture. Then I layered my cardboard on top and added some gyprock mesh tape to finish the background. I then arranged my Chipboard to figure out how I wanted the piece to go... Painted it all black and then began.

I sprayed some Lindys on the background and used some wax to colour the gate to make it pop out of the background. Once dry I used some gold paint to drybrush over the surface to bring out the texture.

I gathered the chipboard that would make up the bulk of my background and used some Rust paste to age it into my coppery patina background. Once completely dry I used some wax to add a colour variation on the cogs.

I layered on my chipboard and Metals (also painted black and Waxed for colour) and saved the main focal point to last. I wasn't sure which colour direction I wanted it to head... In the end I chose some darker blues with Opal Magic paint and turquoise and silver wax to tie in the background with the foreground. 

Added some Art stones and popped a Melange over the center of the padlock. I then used the Lindy's sprays with a brush to colour them.. I didn't want them to be too dark. If you look closely you can see where I did an experiment with a few to see.. Here's your Wheres Wally moment.. Hint: bottom corner..

Steampunk Tags with Kristy Abela

Happy Sunday Funday!! Have a peek at this over your morning cuppa!
Today I get to follow on from my Industrial Steampunk styled Mood Board Challenge to play with the same theme on an set of tags I created.

After sticking down the Stamperia papers to the tags and adding some mesh (Gyprock tape) with 3D gel,  I used a stencil and sprayed a fairly heavy coat of Tim Holtz Resist spray. Once this dried I used Distress Oxide in Evergreen Bough and applied a heavy layer over the whole surface to pick up the exposed bits of paper that the resist spray didn't reach. With a dry cloth I polished off the excess. 

I added the super funky Architextures and a layer of Nuvo Mousse through a stencil. I applied some Distress Crayon with my finger and rubbed it all over the raised surfaces to create shadows. Then inked the edges to finish off my background.

I used Embossing powder and waxes over black gesso on my chipboard and veneers. Tore a piece of calico and distressed it to frame my globes. I added in the door knobs and keyhole embellishments. Stamped some inspirational quotes and finished off with some Art Stones and Micro Beads from Prima.

Hi Everyone it’s Michelle Logan here and I am addicted to all things messy when it comes to creating. I live in suburban Melbourne in a male dominated household of 2 teens and a super craft tolerant hubby.

In a former life I was Physical Education Teacher (please don’t judge LOL!!!) until I came to my senses after 10 years!

I have always been into arty crafty things, I started out making cards and hoarding stamps (am yet to give up the hoarding part). I moved on to wedding invitations (after undertaking a calligraphy course) then scrapbooking (after my first fella’ was born), and now take on all manner of projects including art journaling, canvases, and anything off the page, as long as it’s messy I am in!

I am into all things, painty, inky and grungy, though I admit that I do struggle with feminine girly stuff! The colour purple and flowers really throw me out of my comfort zone. But I am willing to give anything a shot!

I have taught scrapbooking and art journal classes and have had the privilege of being a Scrapbooking Memories Master (2015) and before that a Scrapbook Creations Design Diva (2013/2014).

This is a handmade art journal using an A4 envelope that I painted as the cover….very simple and lots of fun!

 

Inside I have made a few pages (1 signature) out of scraps and watercolour paper….sort of like a junk journal. I have simply joined it all together using a basic pamphlet stitch.

 

For the decoration of the cover I just went to town using heaps of paint stencils and stamps….no thinking about the end result just lay that paint down …hence the Title.

 

hope you liked it…I even used Purple LOL!

My first Technique Post.

It's Leanne Jago here with my first blog post for Art and Soul Studio.

I'm a little nervous but a bit excited. I have created a process video with one of my favourite techniques to add some subtle texture to any piece using Stencils. But first a sneek peak...

Hello Soul Sisters

Welcome to our new look blog, its so colourful that it just makes me want to create.

I am sharing with you today an art journal page that I create during the week.

 

Here is how I created it.

My first step as most of you know I cover 95% of my pages with a layer of white gesso, sometimes it can be thick with lots of texture or other times its just a layer to stop the mediums soaking into the raw paper.
The layer on this piece of watercolour paper is applied with a palette knife with not much texture

My next step was to decide which stencil I was going to use to apply texture to my page. I didn't cover all my surface with the stencil design as I did want a contrast between the two.

My next step was to add colour. Before I added the colour to my page I sprayed it with a decent amount of water so that once I added the coloured sprays they would move around the texture paste without any effort. I made sure that I kept some white space although its not completely white it does have a small amount of colour.

Here is a close up of the shine that was created.

My next step was to add some stamping, I did this with two different stamps. I reinked between each stamp of the images, but I always stamped on a scrap piece of paper first so that the ink was not too dark. I heat dried the ink and then I wanted to reactivate the sprays just a little so I sprayed water from a distance and then quickly dried with my heat gun, this gave the background some more texture.

 

 Here is another close up after the stamping and spraying of water.

 

The last step of my art journal page was to emboss and heat set my piece of chipboard then attach it to the surface with some matte medium.
