Make a Wish - Kristy Abela (Abela Artistry)

Hi Everyone.. Welcome to my inspiration post...

I really wanted to follow up on the quick bite I posted last time to show you how you can take those techniques one step further and create a Steampunk masterpiece.. 

In this project I created a black canvas with pieces of Corrugated cardstock and tissue paper using gesso as a base and also as a 'glue'. 

I primed the canvas and put the scrunched up tissue paper on top to create lots of texture. Then I layered my cardboard on top and added some gyprock mesh tape to finish the background. I then arranged my Chipboard to figure out how I wanted the piece to go... Painted it all black and then began.

I sprayed some Lindys on the background and used some wax to colour the gate to make it pop out of the background. Once dry I used some gold paint to drybrush over the surface to bring out the texture.

I gathered the chipboard that would make up the bulk of my background and used some Rust paste to age it into my coppery patina background. Once completely dry I used some wax to add a colour variation on the cogs.

I layered on my chipboard and Metals (also painted black and Waxed for colour) and saved the main focal point to last. I wasn't sure which colour direction I wanted it to head... In the end I chose some darker blues with Opal Magic paint and turquoise and silver wax to tie in the background with the foreground. 

Added some Art stones and popped a Melange over the center of the padlock. I then used the Lindy's sprays with a brush to colour them.. I didn't want them to be too dark. If you look closely you can see where I did an experiment with a few to see.. Here's your Wheres Wally moment.. Hint: bottom corner..

'Garden Sprite' by Elisa Ablett - A textile mixed media wall hanging

Elisa here from the design team again with my latest project!

A textile mixed media wall hanging in autumn 'garden' tones featuring loads of products from the Art and Soul Studio Shop.

I have put together a photo tutorial to show you how I created the wall hanging - 

Step 1 - Stamp your Prima Princesses 'Lauren' Stamp with archival ink on smooth watercolour paper, fussy cut your image out. Using a paintbrush and a craft mat spray water onto your craft mat and add a little of your chosen coloured art crayons (water soluble) to your image. I sprayed the image first with water as well. I used Vicki Boutin Art Crayons but there are many available in the shop including Distress Crayons, Marabu Crayons, Neo Colours. 

Step 2 - Using either a pre-cut and sewn banner from linen or calico (or you could make your own) Spray your chosen background colours (Lindy's)  onto your fabric and scrunch the fabric between layers. Splatter darker coloured Spray ( I used Mocha Colour Blast colour Spray) to splatter dots over your fabric. Dry thoroughly and then splatter gold ink (Minx Acrylic Ink) over your fabric and then dry. Once dry thread or sew your banner onto a stick.

Step 3 - Use baby wipes to mop up your colour once you have sprayed your fabric banner there should be lots of leftover spray on your mat and you can use the baby wipes to clean up your mat BUT I don't want you to throw it out....let them completely dry and harden. Then pick the best one and pull at the edges until it is distressed and fits perfectly onto your banner.

Step 4 - Stamp a script stamp or another chosen stamp onto your baby wipe and then splatter Minx Gold ink onto your baby wipe and let dry.

Step 5 - Using your Stencil Girl Curlicue Stencil  and Cosmic Brown Nuvo Mousse, stencil the mousse onto the left hand side of your stamped baby wipe using a 'buttering a piece of bread' motion. Peel off the stencil carefully after spreading your mousse onto the stencil. Let dry!

Step 6 - Fussy cut your garden images from the following two scrapbooking papers - 49 and Market Vintage Artistry  - Cut outs. I also used the bird cut out and small piece from the bottom cut out paper. I splatter gold ink and a bit of the green Lindy's spray to make it blend in to my fabric banner.

Step 7 - Grab some fake moss (Art and Soul can order in for you) if you can't find it. I sprayed mine with the Mocha Colour Blast Colour Spray to fit in with my colour scheme.

Step 8 - Sew your baby wipe onto your banner piece. Make it as rough as you like to add to the distressed feel.

Step 9 - Layer and stick down your paper cut outs with a good glue - I like to use Helmar's Acid Free glue.

Step 10 - Wind coloured jute string around the top of your stick and tie down. Glue down your coloured moss onto your banner. I added mine to the string up the top and also at the bottom of the banner.

Step 11 - Add some gold foil leafing by using a good old school glue stick. Add your glue where you want the gold leafing to go and then using tweezers layer your gold leaf onto your glue. Dry gently with a heat gun or let dry naturally. Then using a dry stiff paintbrush, brush over the dried gold leaf. It will take off the parts of the leaf that was not glued down.

Last steps - Using artist wire twirl the wire around the Coloured Jute string on the stick up the top and make a hanger for your banner. See the main photo.

Also add your last few elements including your quote and butterflies and you are finished.
