A Fairy Good Life By Karen Arribas

Hello and welcome to another of my lessons here on the blog. I've decided to do something completely different and create a shadow box piece of art. I've been wanting to create this for a while and decided to give it a go. Enjoy!

Materials used:

Shadow box - Large house box kit (8cm x 14.6cm x 5cm)
Gesso
Collage papers - I used 7Dots Studio, Graphic 45 (seasons collection) and Blue Fern Studios (Garden Life)
Memory Hardware - Artisan powder (Marquise Blue)
Ranger Perfect Pearls (Biscotti)
Fairy and wish jar (from a dollar shop)

Firstly I painted it with white Gesso (there are actually 6 pieces but I attached the bottom piece whilst painting to make it quicker)

I then started to add collage papers to build texture and interest (this is from 7 Dots Studio)

For the bottom piece I wanted to add a grass like effect (this is from a a bouquet of flowers and what it comes wrapped in). I then made some little mushrooms from white card.

I wanted to build different raised layers I added a cut out flower on card to make it more sturdy. This Flower is from Graphic 45 (Seasons Collection)

As you can see all the elements are coming together and the flower looks raised from the background. I cut up a number of small pieces of card and glued them together to create a small pile and stuck it on the back of the flower to create the more 3D effect.

I wanted to add colour but wanted a more antique look. I used Memory Hardware Marquise blue Powder which is great on wood, its quite subtle but you can build layers of colour. I just shook it and then used my fingers to spread it around.

Next I added some twigs to the roof and leaves to the side (these were taken from my garden). I used craft glue to stick them down.

My inspiration was the fairy with the wish Jar, I wanted to put her in a fairy house all of her own so .......voila!

I hope you enjoyed this lesson? it was actually quite easy to make and obviously you can really go to town on these little boxes. I look forward to seeing your projects in the art and soul FB group, let me know if you have any questions. See you next time!

  1. Awesome fairy themed shadow box! I love the twigs for the roof and leaves outside in contrast to the colourful inside!
